Before you go

The essentials for a smooth arrival.

  • Money

The Mauritian rupee (Rs). Cards are accepted in most shops in tourist areas; keep some cash for markets and small stalls.

  • Driving

Traffic drives on the left. Roads are narrow and often winding: allow plenty of time, especially at rush hour around Port Louis.

  • Plugs

230 V power, type C and G (British) sockets. A universal adapter will do.

  • Seasons

Summer, hot and humid, runs from November to April — it is also cyclone season. Winter, from May to October, is milder and drier.

  • Languages

Mauritian Creole in daily life, French and English everywhere. You will almost always be answered in your own language.

  • Lagoon

Water shoes for walking on coral, reef-safe sunscreen, and please leave shells and coral where they are.
